Program note: Throughout the creative process behind Reflections I held a vivid scene of the experience of staring at your own naturally distorted reflection in a calm body of water as occasional droplets cause gentle ripples in the image. This introspection was sparked when I was graced with the birth of my first niece, Adelaide, in the early pre-compositional process of this piece. The scene profoundly stuck out to me as I contemplated how this new small life will go on to affect many others just as a small droplet grows on to create waves in the water—with the hazy reflection of her mother and father imprinted on her throughout her life. I sought to represent this aurally through heavily imitative reverberations of a small motive that slowly realizes its full potential as time goes on. This work was commissioned by the SFASU Flute Choir and is dedicated to Addi.
