The Awakening Valley

Bringing influence from art forms outside of concert music is a long-standing tradition of composers and, in today’s age, composers have barely scratched the surface of the vast possibilities within the art form of video games. This piece first sprouted from a project for a video game scoring course in which I was instructed to reimagine the score for a game of my choice and attempt to encapsulate its Atmosphere. The Awakening Valley depicts an organic setting in transition from the frigid Winter to a warm Spring season. In this piece I sought to create an otherworldly environment for the listener to be immersed in for the duration of the work. As it progresses, the listener experiences each individual region and all that inhabits it until they reach a peak and are able to take it all in at once. Working with teachers, conductors, individual performers, and full ensembles on this piece has been an incredible learning experience for my first work for orchestra and it absolutely will not be my last.
