The State of the Industry (2019)

Program note: The introduction of streaming services has completely transformed the way the average person consumes media. In combination with the vast advances in cell phones and data-providing services, monthly subscription services have become a massively successful business model. This piece showcases those changes that have already occurred and may age or adapt according to those that will inevitably come. Inspiration for this piece came from a piece by the revolutionary 20th Century avant-garde composer John Cage entitled Imaginary Landscape No. 4 for 12 AM radios and 24 performers—one controlling tuning, one controlling volume. In Cages time, AM radio frequencies would have been the mainstream medium for consuming content, and I sought to selectively adapt this philosophy to the culture today (2019). The resulting atmosphere will be radically different from Cage’s as radios can change tuning smoothly and some stations may not have anything being broadcasted at all. This is simply a byproduct of the difference in instrumentation and is reflective of the stark contrast between the times.
